Easy Swedish Meatballs with Creamy Gravy

Tender beef meatballs simmered in creamy, mustard-flecked gravy make a comforting 4-serving dinner with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, very finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon smooth Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon grape jelly or lingonberry jam
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • Add all meatball ingredients except the oil to a large bowl and knead until evenly combined. Roll about 2 teaspoons of mixture into firm balls; chill 5-10 minutes if needed.
  • Heat oil in a wide, deep skillet. Brown meatballs on all sides for 6-8 minutes, then remove.
  • Melt butter in the skillet. Whisk in flour and cook until medium brown. Gradually whisk in beef broth, simmer until thickened, then whisk in milk, mustard, and jelly. Simmer gently about 1 minute and season.
  • Return meatballs to the gravy and warm gently until heated through. Serve immediately.

Notes

Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
