French Onion Soup Recipe

A classic French Onion Soup recipe with caramelized onions, beef broth, and a cheesy crouton topping.

  • 3 tablespoons Butter Unsalted
  • 3 large Yellow Onions Thinly sliced
  • 8 cups Beef Broth Low Sodium
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 6 slices Baguette Toasted
  • 2 cups Gruyere Cheese Shredded

Preparation Steps

  • Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
  • Add beef broth, thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Preheat broiler. Place toasted baguette slices on a baking sheet and top with Gruyere cheese.
  • Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Ladle soup into bowls and top with cheesy croutons. Serve immediately.
