  • 0.75 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1.5 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Molasses
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1.5 cups Hot water

Molasses Frosting

  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter Softened
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup Molasses
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Cake Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, combine oil, sugar, molasses, and eggs. Beat until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting.

Frosting Instructions

  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
  • Add the molasses, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat until well combined.
  • Frost the cooled cake with the molasses frosting.
