  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 80 to 85 percent lean
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour plus more for shaping
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth low sodium
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon butter unsalted

  • Combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder, then shape the mixture into four oval patties.
  • Lightly coat the patties with flour, shaking off the excess.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side; transfer them to a plate.
  • Add the onion to the skillet and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the remaining flour into the skillet and stir for 1 minute.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up browned bits from the pan.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes until cooked through.
  • Stir in the butter, taste the gravy for seasoning, and serve the hamburger steaks hot with the onion gravy.

Notes

Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or green beans.
