Tennessee Onions

Crispy, savory fried onions perfect as a topping or side dish.

  • 2 large onions thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cup vegetable oil for frying

Preparation Steps

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
  • Add the thinly sliced onions to the dry ingredients and toss until evenly coated.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the onions in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan, until golden brown and crispy. This should take about 3-5 minutes per batch.
  • Remove the fried onions with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Season with additional salt if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

These onions are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a day.
