Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
