Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease three 4-inch pans or one 6-inch pan and line the bottoms with parchment.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, then vanilla and sour cream, mixing until smooth.
Mix in the flour, baking powder, and salt, then add the milk and stir just until combined.
Bake 4-inch cakes for 18 to 22 minutes or a 6-inch cake for 24 to 28 minutes, until the cake springs back and a toothpick is clean. Cool completely.
Beat the frosting butter until pale. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, milk, and salt; mix until smooth.
Level and stack cooled layers with frosting, crumb coat, chill 30 minutes, then decorate with the remaining frosting.
Notes
Use a 6-inch pan for one taller cake or three 4-inch pans for layers.
